In 1882, Father Michael J. McGivney established the Knights of Columbus, the world's largest Catholic fraternal service organization. With more than 1.9 million members worldwide, the Knights of Columbus provides its members and their families with a variety of volunteer opportunities in service to the Catholic Church, their communities, their families, and young people. The city of Punta Gorda, FL was founded in 1884 by surveyor Kelly Harvey following instructions from Isaac Trabue.
This small town has managed to preserve its unique history and atmosphere, with oceanfront parks, a system of walking and biking trails, and a collection of independent stores and 26 restaurants. During World War II, the Punta Gorda airfield was built to train air crews and the city's luck flowed along with the national economy and Florida's real estate cycle, which boomed 26%.Catholic Charities is dedicated to helping those in need in Southwest Florida through a range of programs such as refugee assistance, camps for children in need, disaster response, adoption services, housing assistance, HIV outreach activities, and many more. The Knights of Columbus is an integral part of Punta Gorda's history and continues to provide members and their families with volunteer opportunities in service to the Catholic Church. Catholic Charities also works hard to provide assistance to those in need in Southwest Florida.
